What is Medicare/Medi-Cal/Medicaid?
Medi-Cal is the State of California's system of the Federal Medicaid Health Care Program which is financed and jointly run by Federal and State governments. Medi-Cal runs two programs; one for low-income people of all ages and one program for long-term nursing home care.
Many elders and their families mistakenly believe Medicare and/or their health insurance policies will pay for skilled nursing home costs. The truth is Medicare and health insurance policies don't cover nursing home costs. Long-term care is considered "custodial care", and for the most part falls outside Medicare and its supplemental insurance guidelines.
